First Week of K-2 Elementary Library Read-aloud Activities & Lesson

Welcome students on the 1st day of library and introduce how the library works with this editable read-aloud lesson and activity for kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classes.

The teacher-librarian reads aloud one of the picture book recommendations, and after listening to the story, students complete one of the activities during the rest of library class.

This lesson includes:

• Recommended books to read aloud during the first day of elementary library class (1 page)
  
  • “The Midnight Library” by Kazuno Kohara
  • “Book’s Big Adventure” by Adam Lehrhaupt and Rahele Jomepour Bell
  • “The Book Hog” by Greg Pizzoli
  • “I Want My Book Back” by Viviane Elbee and Nicole Miles
  • “The Bad Seed Goes to the Library” by Jory John and Pete Oswald
  • “But Excuse Me That is My Book” by Lauren Child (Charlie and Lola series)
• Drawing Response Activities for students to complete (15 PowerPoint slides and 7 Google Slides)
  
  • Printable version is editable in Microsoft PowerPoint, 2 per letter-sized paper.
  • Digital version is editable in Google Slides to post in Google Classroom, SeeSaw, or other learning platforms.
  • Full color and black & white printable versions
• Optional Research Activity for “But Excuse Me That is My Book” (5 PowerPoint slides and 2 Google Slides)
  
  • Students can also use a database like Pebble Go, World Book Kids, Britannica Kids, or National Geographic Kids to learn more.
  • Keywords are given to help students type and find their
  • Printable and digital versions are editable, just like the drawing activities.
  • Graphics for other digital resources, including Brain POP, EPIC, Sora ebooks, MackinVIA ebooks, and NoteSheep
  • Full color and black & white printable versions
• Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade Lesson Plan in Google Docs format, aligned to:

  • National Common Core ELA Standards.
• Directions and Teacher Notes to help you use this lesson and post it in Google Classroom or other elearning platforms (2 pages, included in preview)
