Have you wondered how to motivate your students to read the books on your state book award list? Do you want to increase participation and voting in your school library, while collaborating with classroom teachers? If so, then this is the product for you!

This 22-page unit is a printable PDF (not editable) and a link to Google Slides. It includes:

  • a 3-page standards-aligned lesson plan for introducing the state book award list to your students
  • advice for purchasing your state award books
  • book display strategies
  • how to handle tracking and accountability
  • printable library passes
  • printable library center sign for students to read award books
  • printable tracking pages (in case your state does not provide these)
  • ideas for prizes and celebrations
  • how to run a book club focused on your state’s award books
  • links to book award lists for all 50 states in the USA

Although the teaching duration for the lesson plans will be 30 minutes to an hour, you will use these strategies for several months each year, year after year, as you promote your state award books in your school library media center.

This product is based on my experiences as an elementary school librarian promoting the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. I focus on promoting books to third through fifth grade students. Many librarians have asked me how I had such high participation rates in our program, so I created this product to explain everything that I did and the motivation behind each choice.

I believe that implementing the ideas in this product will help you encourage and track more reading from your students and will help you collaborate more effectively with your classroom teachers.

If your state award book list is all picture books, then this State Award Book Voting Library Center product would be a better choice for you.
