K-2 Elementary Behavior Expectations Read-aloud Activities & Lesson

Teaching and reviewing library behavior expectations is an important part of your back-to-school library curriculum. Your youngest students may be visiting a library for the first time, and even returning students need reminders. These editable read-aloud activities make it easy for kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classes to learn appropriate library behavior.

The teacher-librarian reads aloud one of the picture book recommendations, and after listening to the story, students complete one of the activities during the rest of library class.

This lesson includes:

• Recommended books to read aloud to teach appropriate library behavior, or “good library manners” (1 page)

  • 2 different activities for each book: 1 to color or put an X on the behaviors, and 1 to cut-and-paste the behaviors into “kind choices” and “hurtful choices” columns
  • Cut-and-paste activity can also be laminated to reuse year after year. (1 slide, full color only)

• Digital Student Activity to assess student learning (42 slides)
  • Editable in Google Slides
  • 3 different slides for each book: 2 slides with larger images and text describing the behavior, and 1 slide with images only.
  • Students move a green checkmark or red X over the picture to identify if the behavior shows good manners or a bad choice.
  • Answer key is included so students can check their answers themselves.
