Library Book Care Storytime Lesson and Printable Activities

Back to School is a great time to teach students how to care for their library books! This ready-to-teach Elementary Library Book Care Lesson gives K–3 librarians everything they need to introduce and reinforce good book care habits.

This comprehensive resource includes a two-part PowerPoint + Google Slides presentation, print-and-go activities, editable lesson plan, Recommended Reads, family take-home letter, and more. Use it as one longer lesson or spread the activities across multiple library visits.

This storytime lesson includes:

1. Interactive Digital Presentation (2 Parts)
   
   • Storytime Read-aloud Lesson (24 slides): Introduces book care strategies and American Sign Language.
   • Scrolling Slideshow (20 slides): Set this to a timer for students to engage with independently! It includes vocabulary, jokes, and “Would You Rather” questions.

Storytime / Lesson Slides:

Part 1 guides students through an interactive whole-class discussion about how to take care of library books, what can cause book damage, and what students should do when a library book is damaged. Discussion topics include:

• How dirty hands can damage library books

• Protecting books from water
• Keeping library books away from pets and babies
• Storing books safely
• Turning pages carefully
• Using bookmarks instead of dog-earing pages

Scrolling Slides:

Part 2 includes extra slides that can be displayed during library checkout. Set the slides to advance automatically, or move through them manually. Students can use these slides with the included scavenger hunts, or you can simply display them for extra library learning during checkout.
