This library storytime lesson is perfect for Friday the 13th or an alternative to Halloween-themed lessons. It introduces students to superstitions from the US and around the world. Includes fun facts, trivia, vocabulary, and more!  

Please note that this presentation is designed to complement a read-aloud. The actual read-aloud story comes from you!

Needed to open and edit: Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint; ability to open PDF documents

This lesson is editable in Google Slides and PowerPoint, and includes:

  • Original storytime song – “The Superstition Song”
  • Sign language slide and how-to sign video link (“luck”)
  • Introduction to superstitions – What they are, and that they are NOT true.
  • “Lucky or Unlucky?” group discussion game – During group discussion, students decide if seven (7) common superstitions are lucky or unlucky. (15 slides)
  • Every slide in the presentation is illustrated with brightly-colored, high-resolution clipart and photos.

Superstitions included:

  • black cats,
  • broken mirror,
  • horsehoe over a door,
  • the number 13 (thirteen),
  • pulling apart / breaking a wishbone,
  • crossing fingers,
  • walking under a ladder,
  • maneki neko (Japanese/Chinese ceramic “waving” cats),
  • nazar or nazar boncuğu (blue colored glass to ward off evil eye),
  • crickets in China,
  • spilling and/or tossing salt,
  • the phrase “break a leg” in theater, and
  • knocking on wood.

17 Scrolling Slides include:

  • Vocabulary words: phobia, triskaidekaphobia, kismet, superstition, wishbone, maneki neko, nazar
  • 2 “Would you rather?” question slides
  • How to distinguish a cricket from a grasshopper
  • Whether you should hang a horseshoe like a U or like a lowercase N
  • What to do if you spill the salt (bad luck superstition)

IMPORTANT! Due to copyright law, read-aloud videos of the books are NOT included.  You will have to record yourself reading the book, or do a live stream of the read-aloud for students to access the book.  If your library owns the ebook(s), you could also share how to read or access ebooks through your online catalog or ebook management platform.
