This Library Orientation Scavenger Hunt is a low-prep library lesson for Back to School! They are an easy, fun way for students to independently explore the library while locating important items that they will need regularly throughout the school year.

This Library Orientation Scavenger Hunt asks students to locate selected items around the library. When they find the items, they will scan the QR codes. Each QR code reveals one word. Students use the words to unscramble the secret message.

This library orientation activity has 25 slides & pages, and it includes:

  • Library Orientation Scavenger Hunt sheet (3 pages)
    • Editable in PDF and PowerPoint
    • 2 versions – One is printed single-sided, and the other is printed double-sided.
  • 19 QR codes (4 pages, 6 QR codes per page)
    • Editable in Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides formats
    • These will work for any location in your library.
    • You can hand-write or type the locations on the QR code pages.
    • Internet access is not required to scan the codes, but devices are needed.
  • 19 “Non-QR code” cards (4 pages, 6 cards per page)
    • Editable in Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides formats
    • These have the secret word on them, so you can use them if you do not want to or cannot use QR codes.
  • Directions / lesson presentation for students (11 slides)
    • Editable in Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides formats
  • Librarian Cheat Sheet / Answer Key to record your locations and the secret word for each (1 page)
    • Editable in Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, and PDF
    • The Cheat Sheet makes it easier if a code gets lost or damaged in the middle of a busy day or class period.
  • Basic Lesson Plan (1 page)
    • Editable in Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, and PDF
    • Standards are not included in the PDF file, but they are listed below.
  • Detailed directions and tips for librarians, including prep instructions, list of suggested library locations, and troubleshooting device settings (10 pages, PDF file)

 

You will also need:

  • Printer, copier, large monitor for presentation slides
  • Students will need: pencil, copies of scavenger hunt grid, cell phone or tablet with a camera or QR code scanner app
  • NOT needed: Internet connection. The QR codes will scan with or without Wi-Fi.
