In this Zombie Dewey Decimal System game groups of students select from 25 zombie apocalypse scenarios. Next, they roll the dice to determine which Dewey Decimal System tools their group can use to survive that scenario. Includes wilderness survival, disease, hunger, and zombies!

This role-playing game can be used before or after teaching the Dewey Decimal System. It does not teach Dewey itself and should not be used in isolation without teaching Dewey in a recent or upcoming lesson. During the game, students will apply Dewey groupings to various survival scenarios.

This product has 41 total pages & slides, and it includes:

  • 33-slide PowerPoint game (editable)
  • Complete directions for teachers and students
  • Dewey Categories sheet (2 pages, editable)
  • Tool Categories sheet (2 pages, editable)
  • List of specific Dewey numbers for items listed on the Categories sheets (2 pages, editable)
  • Record sheets (optional, editable, 2 pages)

Needed to play the Zombie Dewey Decimal Dice Game:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint ONLY – This game does not work in Google Slides, Open Office, LibreOffice, or any program that does not work with trigger animations.
  • Monitor/screen that you can project the PowerPoint game on (all students need to be able to see it clearly)
  • Ability to print 4 PDF pages per student (you can reuse the pages with different classes)
  • Ability to print 1-2 pages per student – This is optional, but it helps students record their solutions.
  • Two 6-sided dice per group (if you have 8 groups, you will need 16 dice)

About the game:

  • Students select from 25 scenarios in five categories
  • Each scenario includes a full-color photo
  • Includes built-in “spacer” slides, which give students an opportunity to share their solutions
  • Don’t worry! The zombie scenarios do not include violence or gore. They are survival scenarios that require ingenuity and problem-solving skills.

About the categories:

  • Each of the “Tool” categories represents a “hundreds section” in Dewey Decimal classification. For example, “Tool Category #5” contains items that represent topics in the 500s section of the library.
  • “Tool Category #11” contains items that might appear in books from the 100s section (since students cannot roll a 1 with two dice).
  • Use the Tool Categories sheet if you have not yet taught Dewey.
  • Use the Dewey Categories sheet if you recently taught Dewey.
  • No traditional weapons (guns, knives, etc.) are included in the tool categories, although rocks are included in the 500s toolkit.
