Need a fun, informative library lesson for Veterans Day? This United States focused lesson includes information about Veterans Day, U.S. history, the U.S. military, and U.S. national monuments.

Please note that this presentation is designed to complement a read-aloud. The actual read-aloud story comes from you!

Needed to open and edit: Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint; ability to open PDF documents

This lesson is editable in Google Slides and PowerPoint, and includes:

16 Whole Class Lesson Slides:

Part 1 is a guided whole-class discussion. The slides walk you through the entire class discussion, from start to finish.

  • Storytime Song and YouTube link – “America the Beautiful”
  • Sign language: “veteran” and fingerspelling “V-E-T”
  • Explanation of who veterans are, the sacrifices they make, why we celebrate them, and how to say thank you to veterans
  • Veteran Spotlight slides for veterans working at your school
  • Remembrance Day is mentioned, however, this lesson is very USA-centric.

29 Scrolling Slides:

Part 2 is the scrolling slides. Set them on a timer to scroll on a screen during library checkout. Students can use the scrolling slides to complete the Scavenger Hunt.

  • Vocabulary Words of the Week: “salute” and “half-mast”
  • Photos and information about veteran memorials: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Vietnam Veterans Memorial/The Wall, Marine Corps War Memorial/Iwo Jima, USS Arizona/Pearl Harbor, and Arlington National Cemetery
  • Branches of the United States military and what they do
  • Correct spelling of “Veterans Day”
  • Who were the Tuskegee Airmen?
  • True-or-false slides about women who fought in the Civil War and military of other countries
  • Would-you-rather question slides
  • Weekly and daily agendas

IMPORTANT! Due to copyright law, read-aloud videos of the books are NOT included. You will have to record yourself reading the book, or do a live stream of the read-aloud for students to access the book. If your library owns the ebook(s), you could also share how to read or access ebooks through your online catalog or ebook management platform.
