Tired of making copies and lost packets during a research project? Your students can learn and practice research skills by writing and answering questions in these editable, differentiated Digital Research Notebooks.

They can be assigned for any question, topic, or research project.

NOTE: These are ​digital Google Docs, and they are designed for students to complete using Google Docs, and submit or turn it in through an online learning platform such as Google Classroom, SeeSaw, etc.

This research product has 31 total pages, and it includes:

  • Four (4) differentiated online Research Notebooks for students to and answer their question and write the resource used.
    • Editable in Google Docs so you can add links to your own library website and databases, or delete the parts you don’t want to use.
    • Each Research Notebook version has:
      1. Space for up to 3 research questions and for students to justify why their resources are trustworthy or reliable;
      2. Resources and links for when students get stuck;
      3. Suggested activities for early finishers.
    • Any or all of the Research Notebooks can be used with students in various grades or for different ability levels to differentiate your instruction.
  • Comprehensive, editable lesson plan in Google Docs format, including:
    • Objectives / Learning targets
    • Big ideas and essential questions from the Pennsylvania Library Model Curriculum
    • AASL National School Library Standards for Learners​, National Common Core ELA Standards, and Pennsylvania Core ELA Standards for 2nd through 8th grades
    • Suggested assessment methods
    • Materials needed
    • Detailed procedure
    • Reflection and notes space for improvements to make next time.
  • Teacher Video Directions and Notes (included in the preview) to use this resource with library centers, or as part of a larger collaborative research project.

Research Notebook versions

  • “Beginner” Research Notebook
    • One (1) resource required, no MLA citation format
    • Students choose the type of resource (book/ebook, database, or website) and write title, author, and web address if given.
  • “Intermediate” Research Notebook
    • One (1) resource required in MLA citation format
    • Includes a reminder to try finding a pre-written citation from a database or to use MyBib.com to get the citation
  • “Advanced” Research Notebook
    • Two (2) resources required; one (1) resource must be in MLA citation format.
    • Includes a reminder to try finding a pre-written citation from a database or to use MyBib.com to get the citation
    • For 2nd resource, students choose the type of resource (book/ebook, database, or website) and write title, author, and web address if given,
  • “Expert” Research Notebook
    • Two (2) resources required in MLA citation format
    • Includes a reminder to try finding a pre-written citation from a database or to use MyBib.com to get the citation
