This lesson unit for Grades 3-5 provides print, digital and unplugged activities to introduce students to books available in the library, help them set goals for the upcoming year and get excited about reading.

Books as Mirrors Activities for 3rd Grade
In Books as Mirrors students will explore how books can act as mirrors, identify their own interests and experiences, and match those to series that they can connect with.
- All About Me activity:
- 2 sheets provided for students to share about themselves. Each acts as a warm up to the Mirror Book activity. You can choose which sheet to use or give students a choice.
- Materials available to print for in person learning or via Seesaw for digital learning.
- Books as Mirrors booklet:
- 2 pages to be printed double sided then folded to make a booklet. Students will identify their interests and match series that connect to, or mirror, those interests. One sheet is editable so you can customize to the series that are available in your library.
- Just Like Me activity:
- Includes directions and materials to play the game either with printable cards or a slideshow.
- Slideshow is editable and sets students up for success by connecting rules to expectations.
- Standards Based Lesson Plan aligned to:
- AASL National School Library Standards for Learners and
- National Common Core ELA Standards.
Books as Windows Activities for 4th Grade
Books as Windows demonstrates how reading can connect students with experiences different from theirs and allows students to find titles featuring new experiences.
- Never, Have I Ever activity:
- Students reflect on their own experiences in this game. Warm up for the lesson, before they begin to consider new series.
- Includes directions and materials to play the game either with printable cards or a slideshow.
- Slideshow is editable and sets students up for success by connecting rules to expectations.
- This or That sort:
- Students sort out different types of experiences considering which are like them and which are not.
- Includes directions and materials to play the game either with printables or digitally via Seesaw or Google Slides.
- Books as Windows booklet:
- Students will identify experiences they’d like to have, and then match series that provide windows to those interests. One sheet is editable so you can customize to the series that are available in your library.
- Includes directions and materials to make a printable booklet or to create it digitally using Seesaw or Google Slides.

Books as Sliding Doors Activities for 5th Grade
Students will examine their own perceptions in Books as Sliding Doors and how books can shift those by immersing them in the setting, events, and characters, with series available to encourage this exploration.
- Traveling Suitcase activity with artifact cards.
- Series Sort:
- Includes directions and materials for printable with series titles included, blank printable for students to fill in, and digital activity via Seesaw or Google Slides.
- Look at This activity:
- Students will reflect on the books they look forward to reading in this wrap up.

Books as Sliding Doors Book Tasting Activities include:
The Book Tasting Activities include activities specific to setting, events, and characters, along with a lesson that includes all three, to further extend and differentiate the concepts for students.
- 4 lessons with step by step directions:
- 3 lessons break down each of the elements – characters, settings, or events
- 1 lesson explores the concept of books as sliding doors
- 4 recording sheets:
- Students will make a list of books that they want to read from the library.
- 1 booklet that explains books as sliding doors.
- Directions for facilitating a Sliding Glass Door Book Tasting 3 different ways:
- Works for print and digital books
- Instructions for interactive learning structures to get students moving while sharing their excitement for books.
