Let’s make literature circles and book clubs easier! Ask these 25 higher order thinking questions with ANY chapter book. As you read a novel together, these prompts will get your students thinking deeply about the books they are reading — no matter which book you choose!

This 44-page unit is a printable PDF (not editable) and a link to Google Slides. It includes:

  • The 25 questions to print on cardstock strips, for students to choose and discuss
  • The 25 questions printed on a page with a border, for students to respond in writing
  • The 25 questions on a digital choice board, allowing students to choose a question and respond on a Google Slide

There are no right or wrong answers to these discussion prompts. Your students will have to think and understand the book to be able to answer these questions.

I introduce these in large group, so we can talk together about what a thoughtful, complete answer sounds like. Then we move to think-pair-share, to give every student the opportunity to respond. Then we can break into literature circles and discuss different books, with everyone trained in responding to the discussion questions.

I’ve used the printable version of these with book clubs and literature circles in my elementary school library for several years to create lively reading discussions. Now the digital version will allow you to more effectively share a chapter book via distance learning, too! You can use these questions year after year, with different grades and different books.
