Need a fun Valentine’s Day activity for secondary students? The “Blind Date with a Book” set-up kit helps make set-up easy and stress-free. It includes everything you need to let your students do the bulk of the work (such as wrapping the books), saving you time and energy.
NOTE: Because this activity uses the term “blind date,” it is best suited for middle school and high school students. If you prefer to use “mystery book” instead of “blind date,” please see Mrs. ReaderPants’ Unwrap a Mystery Book Program instead.
This program kit has 36 slides & pages, and it includes:
Unless otherwise noted, all materials are in Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, and PDF file formats.
- Set-up instructions (2 pages) – Step-by-step directions and tips
- Creation Station instructions (2 pages)
- Includes printable materials for setting up the Blind Date with a Book “Creation Station” in the library.
- This should be 1 or 2 tables that can stay set up for a few weeks. Stock it with paper bags, markers, pens, stickers, construction paper, hold punches, etc.
- In the Creation Station, students will wrap the books and attach the “Hints About This Book” cards.
- Editable in Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides
- Eight (8) “Blind Date with a Book” recommendation cards (2 pages)
- Students fill these out and attach them to the books.
- The cards include spaces for the book’s barcode, genre, “Recommended for…”, and first line.
- The cards are all editable, so you can change the sections as you like.
- Eight (8) “How Did It Go?” cards (2 pages)
- Students fill these out after they try a Blind Date Book.
- They can turn these in for a chance to win a daily, weekly, or Grand Prize drawing, if you choose.
- Student Directions Presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint + Google Slides (10 slides)
- These slides show how the program works and how students can create a wrapped Blind Date Book.
- The presentation is editable, including photos from Mrs. ReaderPants.
- You are welcome to use the author’s photos, or take your own once you have your Blind Date Book ready to go.
- Instruction Posters (7 pages)
- These printable signs tell students how “Blind Date with a Book” works.
- Print, laminate, and display with your wrapped books.
- Includes four designs, and you can edit the directions as you like.
- Troubleshooting Guide (1 page, PDF only)
- Google Classroom Basics (4 pages, PDF only)
